Based on the principle of a circular economy, the NEREUS project aims to develop innovative technologies for the reuse of water, energy and resources from wastewater in urban areas.
This project has been financed by 2014-2020 Interreg 2 Seas programme thanks to the European Regional Development Fund.
The main objective of the project is to transform the wastewater in resource: it looks at operational experimentation and co-design of evaluation and decision tools to increase acceptance of the recovery of resources and the adoption of innovative technologies by public and private decision-makers on the program area.
Within the NEREUS project, CAPSO’s case study looks at 3 different aspects of wastewater treatment:
- Nutrient recovery – improve storage and use of waste sludge for agricultural purposes;
- Water reuse – reuse clean water in agri-food business and public services (to reduce tap water consumption);
- Energy recovery – study of methanogenic power (biogas) from an input mixture (grass, sludge, wastewater).
Besides measuring and proving those experiments on a long-term basis, NEREUS offers a constructive analysis and helps private-public dialogue to achieve CAPSO’s energy strategy.
